While expectations placed on us by others is one thing, the capacity for us to trust in our own performance is quite another. Paul had every reason to be confident: he had industrial strength spirituality. What was it worth? Pretty much a pinch of the proverbial… So, where does our confidence before God really lie?
…not even on a leash. What is Paul talking about here? What is this reference to mutilators of the flesh? And circumcision? How easily expectations and traditions become our security. Our idol. The ‘dogs’ of Paul’s day mutilated people’s bodies in them name of religion. Today’s ‘dogs’ do worse: they are messing with people’s souls.
